Outfit ideas

What to wear on a first date: outfits that feel like you

You do not have to dress like someone else. Choose a familiar outfit that suits the plan and feels comfortable.

WHERE TO START

Start with the place, time and activity. Pick a comfortable base and a top you like, then choose shoes for any walking. You do not need a completely new style.

Make the plan a little clearer

Coffee followed by a walk and a sit-down dinner can need different choices. If you are unsure about the venue, try an outfit you can dress up or down with a jacket or another light layer.

Choose clothes that feel familiar. A cut you have never worn or something that needs constant adjustment can keep your attention on the outfit instead of the conversation.

Coffee or a daytime date

Dark jeans, a plain T-shirt and an open shirt are an adaptable starting point. Swap the T-shirt for a fine knit if it is cooler, or bring a light jacket. Choose trainers, loafers or flat boots according to comfort and the plan.

If you prefer a dress or skirt, pair it with a familiar cardigan or simple top. Looking put together does not require heels or a blazer.

A slightly more dressed-up dinner

Try trousers with a shirt, polo or fine knit and a pair of shoes you know you can wear for the evening. Add a jacket if it suits you and the venue.

A favourite dress, or a skirt with a simple top, is another option. A watch, necklace or bag can be a detail you enjoy without every accessory competing for attention.

Keep colours and practical choices simple

Use combinations you like: navy and cream, black and grey, or denim and white. If you enjoy colour, add one of your favourites. There is no requirement to communicate your personality through a particular colour.

Check the weather, try sitting and walking, and make sure your essentials fit comfortably in your bag or pockets. A light layer leaves room for a change of plan.

Compare two options

Instead of trying your whole wardrobe, make two outfits and compare them. Which feels more like you, and which works better for the plan? You can view your pieces together in Kulis or ask for ideas with a brief such as “dinner, simple and relaxed”. Try the real outfit before making your final choice.

Try it with what you own.
